The romance between Jonathen Briggs and Nellie began when they were children delivering newspapers in the early mornings in a Lancashire industrial town. They remained together all their lives, but Johnathan had many "flutters" as he made his way up the scale of society step by step. He used his friends to help himself and dropped them when he had no further use for them. The book holds the readers attention although it isd crude in parts and is the out spoken story of a self- made man determined to get on. Many of the incidents are very human and true to life in some spheres.
