註釋
Self-stigma has been described by one of the authors of this book as 'a haunting spectre' and by another as a 'shadow' on the lives of those who experience it. Research shows that this shadow can have a significant effect on the lives of people with experience of mental illness. However, research has also identified that self-stigma is part of a cycle, and that everyone has an opportunity to intervene in ways that can break that cycle. Based on the research a new model of stigma and discrimination has been developed. The Discrimination Intervention model encompasses and addresses the concepts of both self-stigma and discrimination and the complex inter-relationship between the two. It includes circuit breakers that can interrupt the cycle. Reflecting on the Discrimination Intervention model, the chapters of this book explore the concept of self-stigma from the perspective of authors who have experience of mental illness, or have researched self-stigma, or both.
