The novel is set during WWII and features British Officers and a small number of Free French fishermen aboard 'The Genevieve' a converted fishing boat. They have very little in the way of weapons ( a flame thrower and a few guns) and their mission is to attack German boats off the coast of Brittany. As we get to know the men we see that each is a hero in his own way.
