註釋
Metis is a fictional account of a real-life 18th century French-Odawa fur trader and warrior, Charles de Langlade, as told through a series of interviews with a reporter from the New-York Evening Post. The reporter, P. V. Lawson, visits Langlade at a boarding house in Green Bay Wisconsin and gets him to tell his life story over a series of discussions fueled by rum and whiskey. Langlade's life, while fictionalized in this account, was real and impactful on Canadian, Native American, and US history. As a product of Native and European parents, Langlade was multi-lingual and multi-cultural which enabled him to move between two distinct worlds. His wilderness and military skills combined with his charisma enabled him to lead groups of warriors (Native, European, and colonial) in numerous battles across three wars including: the French and Indian War, Pontiac's War, and the American War of Independence. Even though he was on the losing side of the French and Indian War and the War of Independence, his talents were so manifest that the winners retained his future services particularly as a liaison with the various Native American tribes in the Midwest. Langlade is often referred to as the 'Father of Wisconsin' as he and his family were amongst the first permanent settlers of that territory.
