John T. Jones, Jr. Papers
註釋General description of the collection: The John T. Jones, Jr. papers include a completed World War II Veterans Survey questionnaire and a memoir dated 29 October 1992 in which Jones traces his military service and postwar activities, comments on aspects of military life, and recounts the events of 30 March 1945 when he was captured. Weapons, equipment, clothing, rations, and supply services were all good, as was leadership at all levels. He particularly admired the leadership of MG Maurice Rose. Recreation consisted of reading, drinking, sports, cards, and travel. In Africa, he enjoyed USO shows with Dinah Shore and Bob Hope. He says that his short stay in Africa precluded much contact with civilians, but that in England, the civilians treated him like royalty. Morale in the 3rd Armored Division was always high. He describes a typical day at headquarters and the organization of G-3 soldiers into three small units who rotated night duty. Sleep became a problem and they were exhausted most days. The memoir describes in detail the events of 30 March 1945 when he was selected to go with MG Rose and an advance party as a stenographer. Three vehicles, two jeeps and a scout car, joined the "Welborn Task Force" which was attacking a small German town. The final destination was to be Paderborn. He describes a period when they were stalled and Colonel Brown and MG Rose were trying to shoot a German. He describes their capture and initial interrogation by the Germans. His wound was cauterized by his sitting against the exhaust of the German tank that provided the prisoners of war with transportation.
