註釋The main focus of this study is a sociolinguistic exploration into the use of codeswitching as a linguistic/poetic device in bilingual poetry. Taking into consideration that poetic language is intentional and bilingual poetry highly oral, I examine closely the poet's motivations for the use of codeswitching, in an attempt to establish a connection between the poetics, stylistics and linguistics. To that effect, I analyze a sampling of poems written by Chicano and Nuyorican poets in terms of Myers-Scotton's (1993) markedness model, which is intended to account for speaker's socio-psychological motivations for codeswitching. I also look at the effect of codeswitching on poetic elements like tone, theme, imagery and other rhetorical devices. The analysis yields an integrated view of the poetic, stylistic, linguistic and social components of this poetry. The poet's perceived intentions toward the audience are linked to the use of codeswitching as a marked choice. Furthermore, codeswitching enhances other poetic devices and elements in the poem.
