A Comparison of Slang Translation in Two Versions of Subtitles of the Film Clueless
註釋The thesis deals with the topic of slang translation in subtitles of the film Clueless. Two different translations by two subtitlers are compared and contrasted. The first version of the subtitles was created for the DVD release in1995, while the second version of the subtitles was created approximately 10 years later for television. The first part presents the theoretical grounds of audiovisual translation and subtitling as well as slang translation in subtitles. In the second part the examples of the use of slang in the film are presented together with both translations. The analysis of the translations is made using Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (11th edition) and Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary as well as the Dictionary of Standard Slovene, Dictionary of Newer Vocabulary and an online slang dictionary Urbandictionary.com. The discussion of the examples is based on the analysis; the appropriateness of each chosen expression is discussed as well as the lack of translations. The fact that the subtitles were created within 10 years difference is also taken into account in the discussion. Alternative possibilities for the translations are given and the translations are compared as to which is better on the level of slang translation and as a whole.
