Horizons of Possibility
註釋The word horizon is defined in my dictionary as 1): the furthest that you can see, where the sky seems to meet the land or the sea; and 2): the limit of our desires, knowledge or interests. I am using the word 'horizon' in this collection of photographs and essays in both senses. The essays in part one are an attempt to explore our cognitive horizons by looking at where our ideas, our motivations, and our capacity for art and science might come from. Why do we often fail to notice our own areas as viable subjects for photography? What is it about our culture that allows us to make so much progress, and so fast? And why does someone like myself feel so compelled to go out in all kinds of weather to some of the most remote places in the UK just to bring back a photo? Could aspects of our evolution provide us with some answers to these questions?Part two are the 'horizons' that I have personally witnessed and recorded with my camera, these are the more tangible, real and 'physical' horizons - literally where the sky meets the land or sea. Horizon 1 is from the perspective of my hometown - Newport City (south east Wales), with each subsequent horizon being geographically further away from the last. Horizon 2 is an exploration of wider Wales. Horizon 3 is where I go beyond Wales into England and Scotland.
