註釋The autobiography by the Florentine Jewish musician and composer was written over a period of twenty-four years from 1942 until 1966, two years before his death. For nineteen years it has remained inedited and only now appears in print for the first time. Part 1, set in Florence at the beginning of the 20th century, covers the period of the author's childhood and youth, his student years and the first affirmations as composer, pianist and musical critic. It closes abruptly in the summer of 1939 with the forced exile brought about by the persecution of Italian Jews through the Fascist racial laws. Part 2, set in America where, in the 1940s, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco produced music for films in Hollywood, but where he also taught and composed, the author tells of his life and experiences and of his meetings with many of the great protagonists of musical and cultural life of the 20th century. A final appendix contains a series of reflections and comments by the composer on his mature works. An extensive name index completes the volume. The second volume, arranged chronologically, comprises a complete catalogue of Mario Castelnuovo Tedesco's numbered and unnumbered works and transcriptions; a bibliography of the composer's unpublished and published works and a filmography.
