The translation is preceded by a substantial introduction which attempts to place the Auch in its historical context and to explain the precise nature of Herder's contribution to the development of the modern historical sense. Herder's historicism grew out of a negative reaction to Enlightenment historiography and one chapter of this study is therefore devoted to an analysis of the work of such Enlightenment historians as Voltaire and Iselin. Herder rejected the Enlightenment attitude to the past and offered his new historicist approach as an alternative.
