사막의 교역로, 코로스코 루트(Korosko route) : 코로스코(Korosko)는 아스완의 남쪽(Aswan), 이집트 누비아 나일 강변(the Nile River in Egyptian Nubia)에 건설된 거점을 일컫는 지명으로 사막을 횡단하는 캐러밴의 출발점이자 종착점으로 활용되었습니다. 또한 여행자들이 이용하는 ‘바닥이 둥근 활을 가진 선미 바퀴(a turtle-bottomed, round-bowed stern-wheeler)’란 의미의 탈 것을 의미하기도 합니다. 아서 코난 도일의 코로스코의 비극(The Tragedy of the Korosko by Arthur Conan Doyle)(1898)에서는 여행자들이 타고 이동하는 선박의 이름으로 등장하며, 13명의 승객 이름 또한 초반에 공개됩니다.

The passengers of the Korosko formed a merry party, for most of them had travelled up together from Cairo to Assouan, and even Anglo-Saxon ice thaws rapidly upon the Nile. They were fortunate in being without the single disagreeable person who, in these small boats, is sufficient to mar the enjoyment of the whole party. On a vessel which is little more than a large steam launch, the bore, the cynic, or the grumbler holds the company at his mercy. But the Korosko was free from anything of the kind. CHAPTER I.

1897년 스트랜드 잡지(The Strand magazine)에 선연재된 후 이듬해 출간된 코로스코의 비극(The Tragedy of the Korosko by Arthur Conan Doyle)(1898)은 아서 코난 도일의 역사 소설로써 유럽이나 캐나다가 아닌, 아프리카 이집트를 배경으로 한다는 점에서 독특함이 있습니다.

The mud bricks with which these refuges were constructed showed that the material had been carried over from the distant Nile. Once, upon the top of a little knoll, they saw the shattered plinth of a pillar of red Assouan granite, with the wide-winged symbol of the Egyptian god across it, and the cartouche of the second Rameses beneath. After three thousand years one cannot get away from the ineffaceable footprints of the warrior-king. CHAPTER VII.

기원전에 해당하는 이집트 신왕국(New Kingdom of Egypt)(1550~1077 BC) 시기에는 나일 강을 오르내리는 캐러밴의 행로는 코로스코 루트(Korosko route)라고 부를 정도로 유서 깊은 교역로입니다. 코로스코(Korosko)는 1970년 아스완 댐(Aswan High Dam)이 완공된 후 형성된 나세르 호수(Lake Nasser)에 잠겼으며, 현재는 이집트와 수단의 국경선에 위치한 와디할파(Wadi Halfa)가 그 역할을 대신하고 있습니다. 1895년 이집트를 여행하는 유럽과 미국 출신의 여행객은 코로스코(Korosko)를 타고 나일 강을 따라 아부시르(Abousir)로 향하던 중 이슬람 세력인 데르비시 전사(Dervish warriors)들의 습격을 받습니다!!

So the Korosko had been taken, and the chances of rescue upon which they had reckoned—all those elaborate calculations of hours and distances—were as unsubstantial as the mirage which shimmered upon the horizon. There would be no alarm at Halfa until it was found that the steamer did not return in the evening. Even now, when the Nile was only a thin green band upon the farthest horizon, the pursuit had probably not begun. In a hundred miles, or even less, they would be in the Dervish country. How small, then, was the chance that the Egyptian forces could overtake them. They all sank into a silent, sulky despair, with the exception of Belmont, who was held back by the guards as he strove to go to his wife's assistance. CHAPTER VI.

세계의 이국적인 풍경과 기묘한 사건사고에 유독 관심이 많았던 아서 코난 도일은 세계 각지에서 식민지를 강점하던 영국이 현지의 세력과 충돌한 실제 사례를 소재로 삼아 이번 작품을 집필하였습니다. 물론 영국 작가답게 영국의 제국주의(British Imperialism)를 적극적으로 옹호하고 있다는 한계는 있습니다만……. 결말을 공개하자면, 승객들은 무사히 구출되었습니다.

The Dervishes—or what was left of them—were riding slowly some little distance out in a confused crowd, their patchwork jibbehs and red turbans swaying with the motion of their camels. They did not present the appearance of men who were defeated, for their movements were very deliberate, but they looked about them and changed their formation as if they were uncertain what their tactics ought to be. It was no wonder that they were puzzled, for upon their spent camels their situation was as hopeless as could be conceived. CHAPTER X.

국내에는 번역본조차 출간되지 않은 작품이지만, 아서 코난 도일은 이 작품이 맘에 들었는지 1909년에는 직접 연극 대본(playwright)으로 각색하기도 했습니다. 연극 제목은 코로스코의 비극(The Tragedy of the Korosko by Arthur Conan Doyle)(1898)에서 불의 운명(Fires of Fate)(1909)으로 변경하였으며, 1923년과 1932년 무성영화로 제작된 바 있습니다. 연극 대본(playwright)은 리브리복스 오디오북으로 청취하실 수 있습니다.
