Biotechnological developments affecting livestock improvement during the last few years in USA and other Western nations have been marked by biological developments that are absolutely amazing. Recent progress in recombinant DNA technology and embryo transfer allows genetic informations to be transferred directly between individuals in mice. Furthermore first few reports of the production of transgenic farm animals have been published (Hammer et al, 1985; Kraeusslich, 1987), and embryo transfer technology is being routinely practised in many countries. Against this background, development of this new technology in Asia is remarkably slow although sporadic attempts have been made by individual scientists to investigate certain aspects of embryo transfer and genetic engineering.
