註釋
This is the first systematic attempt by an Indian social scientist to examine the consequences of crowding -- a serious problem in most developing countries. The volume contributes to the field of man-environment relations by providing a behavioural perspective on life in crowded environments, and the effect on social behaviour and affective processes. After an overview of research, the author reports the findings of field studies and experiments, some of which were conducted by himself at three levels: personal, interpersonal and community. Jain discusses the inter-relationship of population density with psychological processes, particularly those that are affective, social and motivational. He points out that the consequences of high population density include stress, anxiety and withdrawal.
