The 1990 municipal elections returned a minority of ALP endorsed candidates to Collingwood Council for the first time in more than sixty years. McConville attributes this to the social polarization of the suburb - the high-rise poor share little in common with the middle classes of Clifton Hill. By contrast, "....Labor's success in Brunswick...suggests that residents respond to a sense of solidarity founded in shared economic interest and extended through creative local ventures".
