▶ 난교의 극장(a theatre of orgy), 네슬의 탑(The Tower of Nesle) : 센 강(la Seine)의 남쪽에 위치한 네슬의 탑(The Tower of Nesle)은 지름 10미터, 높이 25미터의 거대한 건축물로 대학교(Collège des Quatre-Nations)를 거쳐 현재는 프랑스 학회(Institut de France)가 자리 잡고 있습니다. 네슬의 탑은 1314년 필립 4세의 며느리가 연루된 네슬 타워 스캔들(Affaire de la tour de Nesle)이란 ‘간통죄의 현장’으로 유명한데, 뒤마는 이에 착안한 로망스 라 투르 드 네슬(La Tour de Nesle)(1832)란 작품을 발표하였습니다.

▶ 프랑스 르네상스의 아버지, 프랑수아 1세(King Francois I)(1494~1547) : 당시 프랑수아 1세(King Francois I)는 신성 로마 제국의 황제 카를 5세(Karl V)(1500~1558)와 사사건건 부딪치면서도 열세였음에도 불구하고, 예술문화 분야에 대한 공로가 큰 군주였습니다. 특히 이탈리아의 르네상스를 프랑스로 성공적으로 이식하였는데, 레오나르도 다빈치(Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci)(1452~1519)를 비롯해 다양한 이탈리아 예술가를 후원하였습니다. 모나리자(Mona Lisa)가 프랑스에 있는 이유가 바로 여기에 있죠! 이탈리아 출신의 화가 겸 건축가이자 조각가 프란체스코 프리마티초(Francesco Primaticcio)(1503~1570) 또한 1532년부터 프랑스 파리에서 사망할 때까지 거주하였고, 첼리니 또한 1540년부터 1545년까지 프랑수아 1세의 지원을 받으며 창작에 몰두하였습니다.

It would be a much simpler task to make a list of the fictitious characters and incidents in "Ascanio," than to enumerate those whose existence or occurrence is well authenticated. Colombe and her governess are apparently creations of the novelist's brain, and the same is true of Hermann, little Jehan, Jacques Aubry and his light o' love. The Provost of Paris was Jean d'Estouteville, not Robert d'Estourville; but he was actually in possession of the Petit-Nesle, which was the abode granted to Benvenuto by a deed which is still extant, as are the letters of naturalization bestowed upon him.
