Reynolds' Lady Worsley and the Narrative of Celebrity
註釋The final phase of the narrative may be "read" directly in the imagery of the painting and its later reception. Reynolds' reference to Lady Worsley's marriage in the portrait aims to reclaim for the sitter an elevated position in society despite her tarnished reputation. Eventually, Lady Worsley was reconciled with her family, bringing about her personal redemption among her social circle. Similarly, the painting, though rejected by her husband was accepted by her stepfather and hung among the other portraits at the family's estate even after the scandal of adultery trial in 1782.
