註釋Lady Mary, a widow, and her sister Lady Lilian inherit a Belgravian mansion without the income necessary for its upkeep. Mrs Pidgeon, an acquaintance of Lady Mary's late husband, her daughter Una, and her brother Tom Larcomb, call on the two ladies, with the result that the Pidgeons move in, with the aristocratic sisters as paying guests. Mrs. Pidgeon, nouveau riche, at first offends but eventually all is resolved: Una, formerly gauche and clumsy, is a success when presented at Court and finally pairs off with Lady Mary's son, Tim - who at first glance detested her; the very downright Tom Larcomb makes violent love to the not unresponsive Lady Lilian, sweeping her off her feet. Lady Mary and Mrs. Pidgeon, left to their own devices, plan to go around the world together.
