Drug and Alcohol Abuse
註釋I have learned a great deal since the publication of the First Edition of this text in 1979. My patients and colleagues have helped me continue to update this text so that readers are offered the most relevant and meaningful information on pharmacology, epidemiology, and treatment issues as they relate to the categories of drugs dis cussed in the various chapters. It seems as if each new edition requires as much time for literature review and writing as the original book, but I believe the effort is well worthwhile. The present edition offers an updated group of references, the great majority of which have been added since the publication of the Third Edition in 1989. Much new and interesting information has accrued on the pharmacological effects of these substances on the brain, including a great deal of more recent information on the impact on specific receptors. These last five years have also witnessed an expansion of the sophistication of the information in the literature on comorbid or dual diag nosis issues for the substance use disorders, and 1994 marked the publication of DSM-IV. Modest advances have been made in the potential importance of matching patients with specific treatment components, new data have been produced regard ing the importance of methadone maintenance, and a number of new pharmaco logical treatments are now undergoing aggressive testing in the field, especially as they relate to the treatment of alcohol dependence.
