註釋Several parts of India are vulnerable to natural disasters of one kind or the other, like flood, heavy rainfall, cyclone, strong wind, earthquake, avalanche, landslide, fire, volcanic erruption, etc. However, due to advances in science and technology, the phenomenon of occurrence of natural disasters and their characteristics as well as the nature of damage and destruction caused, it is now possible to determine these more precisely. As a result, occurrence of natural disasters, identifying locations of possible damage and destruction can be forecasted with a greater degree of accuracy. Availability of such crucial information in advance can greatly help in avoiding or minimising loss of life and property.

Therefore, armed with this information, today, we are required to cope with natural disaster through taking effective measures that are necessary for prevention and mitigation of losses and sufferings. Papers authored by eminent specialists, who have considerable experience of dealing with natural disasters, have been included in this volume. Indicating measures that have been devised to mitigate natural disasters as well as suggestions for further work, these papers cover a wide range of subjects having technological, economic and social ramifications. It is expected that the contents of this volume would be found useful by all concerned with mitigation of, preparedness for, and management of natural disasters. Needless to emphasise that much more material needs to be presented on its different aspects to help avert the tragedies that are caused by natural disasters.
