註釋Based on Forster’s personal experiences working and travelling in India in the 1920s, A Passage to India is set in British India in the midst of the Indian independence movement. The story follows an Indian Muslim physician, Dr. Aziz, and his burgeoning friendship with two visiting Englishwomen and Cyril Fielding, a local university principal. Things are brought to a head when during a trip to the Marabar Caves, Dr. Aziz is accused of sexually assaulting one of the women. The subsequent trial is protracted and painful, and serves to highlight the racial tensions between Englishmen and Indians at the time.
