註釋This document consists of the first two (printed) components of an instructional packet that includes: (1) a 206-page book, "Face Within Ourselves"; (2) a 39-page study guide "African American Artists, Affirmation Today"; (3) 28-minute videotape of five contemporary artists; (4) twenty 35-mm color slides. This packet introduces the significant contributions of African-American artists to the history of American art. In the 18th and 19th centuries, African-American artists adapted European styles and subjects, choosing subject matter carefully, to avoid racial content that would have made their work less well received. In the 20th century, African-American artists have continued to participate in mainstream traditions while also proclaiming their own heritage in their art. The study guide presents four teaching units with several lessons in each. Unit I: "My People-Our People," looks at the diverse experiences and cultural connections among African- Americans and explores their contributions to U.S. culture. Unit 2: "Masking Matters," demonstrates the influence of the Harlem Renaissance on visual artists and looks at expressions of ancestral heritage and racial pride in their art. Unit 3: "Education and Equity," looks at the effect of education and the ways artists have responded to cultural and educational opportunities. Unit 4: "Myth and Modern Society," explores the use of classical myth in contemporary art and presents myth as commentary on human experience. Background information on the unit and lesson topics, information concerning artists and art exemplified, activities and discussion suggestions are included. A glossary concludes the guide. (MM)
