This report reviews the current research on the effects of culture on child development, language acquisition, socioemotional development, cognitive development, and educational outcomes. In particular it highlights how particular parent communication styles and family interaction are culturally based and can foster certain cognitive styles in their children, with implications for early education outcomes. Schools and teaching practices are themselves culture based, and can disadvantage young children reared differently. The report focuses largely on studies comparing different cultural groups in the United States, though studies from other countries are noted.
