An Investigation Into the Relationship Between Subjective Well-being and (relative) Wealth in Germany
註釋This thesis investigates the role of wealth for subjective well-being (SWB). Based on theoretical considerations, a literature review is carried out using an online findings archive. A total of 161 research findings are compiled, systematically presented and discussed. Moreover, the relationship between SWB and wealth in Germany is investigated using data from the "Panel on Household Finances". The results of the empirical analysis show that total assets are positively and total debt negatively associated with SWB. The results regarding relative wealth show that upward comparisons of wealth with the respective reference group play a greater role for SWB than downward comparisons. Furthermore, an increase in total assets of the relevant reference group is on average associated with, c.p., higher levels of SWB. This finding is called the tunnel effect and means that the higher assets of others serve as information for the development of one's own future assets.
