Emlen had come west for his health, and lived in desert areas of California and New Mexico, and in the Colorado mountains. His letters describe a horseback journey from California to New Mexico, accompanying a trail herd of sheep, February - September, 1876, and travels in New Mexico and Colorado afterward, with comments on the country, the Indians, and the military.
