註釋Although the Ecumenical Movement condemned antisemitism already in 1910, its relationship to Judaism remained centered on missionary efforts; only in the 1960s were these replaced by dialogue. The World Council of Churches tried to involve the Eastern Churches in this dialogue, but with scant success. Traces anti-Judaism in the Byzantine Empire. Under pressure from the Church, the emperors issued laws restricting Jewish worship and learning, and acquiesced in the destruction of synagogues. Greek Orthodox historians, however, see the Church as the protector of Jews. The Church has not responded to calls by American theologians to remove the deicide accusation from the liturgy. It denies guilt toward the Jews, citing the rarity of pogroms in its history, compared to the West, and the fact that it had no part in the Holocaust. Concludes that although Greek Orthodoxy and Judaism have much in common, the dialogue between them will have to be on a different basis from that of the Western Churches.
