Tarawera and the Terraces
註釋The eruption of Mt. Tarawera on 10 June, 1886 was most unexpected. Explosions were heard at Wellington, Blenheim, Auckland, Wanganui and New Plymouth and aroused all sorts of speculation. Ash spread over the Bay of Plenty, and in Rotorua, people fled in their nightclothes. The loss of life was estimated at more than 150. The eruption led to the migration of hundreds of people, threatened thousands of livestock with starvation and destroyed the southern eighth wonder of the world, the Pink and White Terraces.
