The Iron Snake
註釋The Kenya and Uganda Railway, called the 'Iron Snake' by the wondering Kikuyu who watched the uncoil, was begun on 5th August, 1896, on the Mombasa mainland and reached Port Florence on Lake Victoria on 19th December, 1901. This is the story of the building of the railroad; of the vision of the men who planned it, Ronal Hardy's power of evoking the landscape, whether it be the dead of aridity of the Taru desert, or the mist-hung beauty of the Tsavo river, is matched by his sympathy for the kind of men who found themselves engaged in what was often a desperate adventure.
