註釋While puzzling for women's sports advocates who framed their philosophies of participation on second wave feminist theories of equal rights, the continued existence of cheerleading is not so outdated for the girls who participate. These girls have created a blended identity for themselves by incorporating and rejecting different elements from their social influences---from feminism to the established male sports model to corporate marketing strategies---to create a third wave sensibility. Cheerleading remains relevant for three reasons: (1) the activity has adapted to the established male sports model creating a sense of legitimacy, (2) cheer companies have pushed an image of cheerleading that is athletic and competitive to keep themselves in business, and (3) the girls themselves continue to enjoy the activity and blend an identity of femininity and athleticism.
