This book is an easily accessible one-volume introduction to the whole body of Persian literature. The author, Dominic Brookshaw, has taught Persian literature at university level for several years, which combined with his research gives him a deep knowledge of the field as well as insight into what students need in such an introductory level text. Clearly written, the work keeps scholarly apparatus to a minimum while including short guides to major writers, patrons and dynasties, key events and definitions of genres. It also includes translated excerpts to give a flavour of the works under discussion.
