Late Adolescence and the Transition to Adulthood
註釋Recognizing that the rate and scope of change during early adolescence creates special vulnerabilities and opportunities for intervention directs research attention to the third decade of life. Examination of late adolescence and the transition to adulthood is essential in order to maximize understanding of the longer term importance of development during early adolescence. The rich body of knowledge on early adolescence allows for certain questions regarding late adolescence to be addressed:

* What are the effects of problems and/or successes during early adolescence?

* How much plasticity remains?

* Where and how much is the opportunity for continued change constrained?

The data make possible an in-depth examination of development during late adolescence as individuals make the transition to adult responsibilities in a variety of domains.

A number of empirical research questions have been fueled by social change and by more than a decade of research on childhood and adolescence. As a result, this issue is devoted specifically to late adolescence as it sets the stage for and leads into the third decade of life. The editors aim -- in addition to striving for quality in science and in significance of research -- was to capture as many diverse themes, perspectives, fields, topics, and methods as possible that have been described for research on adolescence.
