註釋
The first paper of this two-manuscript dissertation proposes a model of second language reading, positing factors of L1 reading ability, L2 language knowledge, background knowledge, and reading comprehension strategies. The proposed model illustrates and predicts how these four factors shift in their influence on reading comprehension at two different levels of second language proficiency. The second paper consists of an exploratory study of the proposed model which investigated and compared the relationships between background knowledge and reading comprehension, and reading comprehension strategies and reading comprehension. Data taken from 20 university-level English language learners indicated that reading comprehension strategies were more strongly associated with reading comprehension than was background knowledge. This finding is discussed in light of current reading research and the proposed model.
