This is an English text of the Spanish laws designed for governing the Indians of the New World. It gives the student of American history a glimpse into the thinking of the medieval churchman and jurists who were attempting to create in New Spain a community based on Christian and Aristotelian teaching. This utopian vision stood in stark contrast to the barbarous reality of Spanish rule.
