Col. Jonathan Merriam (1834-1919) was born in Passumpsic, Vt., a son of Rev. Jonathan and Achsah Olin Merriam. He married (1) Betsy Barland (1836-1861), daughter of Thomas and Margaret Wilson Barland. They had one child. He married (2) Lucie Carter White (b. 1841) in Champaign, Illinois, in 1864. He was born in Tremont, Ill. to Chaplain, Rev. John Brown White and his wife Mary Merriam White. They had six children. At the time of his death Col. Jonathan Merriam lived in Wheaton, Illinois. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Illinois.
