註釋
Twenty-five small TNT charges have been fired as a part of an investigation of the effect of charge depth or height and the effect of soil characteristics. The purpose of the investigation is to assist in predicting the results of very large explosions. These 25 charges were fired in locations in Utah and Nevada near the sites of earlier large explosions to permit comparison of the results. Preliminary comparison with these earlier explosions suggests that the air-blast effects of explosions in uncomplicated areas can be predicted with satisfactory accuracy on the basis of existing experimental evidence. The underground effects, on the other hand, show a much greater dispersion (of the order of 10 to 1). The causes for this dispersion are not adequately established at present, but variation of the physical characteristics of the soil is believed to be a major factor.
