The design and construction of a packed-bed electrowinning cell for the recovery of gold from aqueous cyanide solutions is presented. Results that were obtained from various locations have been interpreted in terms of a generalized model describing the operation of packed-bed electrodes. The model enables the size of an electrowinning plant to be determined from a knowledge of one parameter, the characteristic length.
