The aim of this work was to prepare various sol-gel layers doped with appropriate indicators for pH and ion sensing. The pH sensitive dye fluorescin was incorporated into a sol-gel cocktail and the resulting materials were tested for their response to pH. In the area of ion sensing sol-gels became important because they show some capability to retain into sol-gel network indicators and at the same time they allow penetration of small ions. In this case two quenchable dyes were doped: lucifer yellow for the the detection of Cu2+ ions and the lucigidin dye which is efficiently quenched by halides and amines resulting in an ion concentration-dependent fluorescene decrease without a shift of wavelength.
