Textbooks and the American Indian
註釋"These evaluations are the work of thirty-two Indian scholars, native historians, and Indian students. More than three hundred books were examined in the course of this Study. Not one could be approved as a dependable source of knowledge about the history and culture of the Indian people in America. most of the books were, in one way or another, derogatory to the Native Americans. Most contained misinformation, distortions, or omissions of important history. All these books are currently being used in the schools of this country. Some of the older ones have given way to others which are just as bad. All of those listed as texts of the Bureau of Indian Affairs were in use for teaching Indian students at the date of this printing. None have been retired by the publishers. A textbook is an instrument of learning, which may be compared to an automobile as an instrument of transportation. An automobile which has defective brakes or is otherwise not dependable, is recalled by the manufacturer, so that lives may not be endangered. But a textbook which is defective, inaccurate, and unreliable, is not retired despite the possibility that minds may be endangered."-- Page 11.
