註釋
"Dennis Farr traces English art from Whistler to Ben Nicholson and Henry Moore. A central theme is the breakdown of the old academic tradition and the increasing importance of those innovators who worked outside the established art societies. This was the period of English Impressionism, Art Nouveau, the Arts and Crafts Movement, the Bloomsbury Group, and Art Déco. In the field of architecture he describes the conflict between those who adhered to historical revivalism and the practitioners of a 'free style'. He also relates how, in the decorative arts, the craftsmanly ideals of William Morris and his followers were reconciled with the mass production of the machine age, and he stresses the significance of this for the history of the modern movement." --
