Published in 1874 , it was written at 50 years of age work, being his debut .Modeled after Cervantes, James suggests recovery from a manuscript found in the papers of a cathedral in Andalusia , in which a story about characters that the name be changed to preserve their identity is told.At the time of Valera , the work received the reading public and literary criticism rave reviews being translated into ten languages and getting more than 100,000 copies sold. Isaac Albéniz wrote an opera in 1895 based on this work .
