註釋This paper presents the preliminary results of an attempt to produce a price index for military goods and services. A price index combines the prices of a large number of different commodities or services into one summary number that should reflect faithfully the price change from one time to another. Such an index would permit consideration of military expenditures in terms of real dollars, which are not obscured by the money veil of changing prices. In addition, having an index available would make possible improvements in resource-allocation management, systems analysis, budgeting, procurement contracting, and other areas where studies may have been stymied by the lack of historical price-change data.
