註釋
"Nuclear weapons are sometimes an afterthought today even though they are tremendously important in international politics. If one attempts to understand nuclear weapons or nuclear strategy, information quickly becomes too technical or theoretical. How should a person try to understand why the US maintains nuclear weapons and how those weapons are “used” or postured? The answer is through the lens of grand strategy. Grand strategy is the way that a nation solves problems on the largest scale, using the various instruments of national power to create a desired end state or to meet an objective. Using research and publications from both academia and government organizations, this paper describes the concept of grand strategy, the arc of US grand strategy, and the influence of nuclear weapons on US grand strategy. It is important to understand that nuclear weapons have helped the US to continue to remain a world power, but they have not necessarily steered American grand strategy. These fearsome weapons helped keep the Cold War cold while allowing Western international institutions to foster increased prosperity and peace. Finally, a review of nuclear issues was conducted in light of the most recent Presidential strategy documents issued from the Biden administration, and several recommendations to meet American grand strategic interests are included. Proponents of the US nuclear force should continually emphasize how nuclear deterrence helps to ensure peace and stability. Nuclear weapons are not a panacea for the increasingly tense world, but US nuclear deterrence serves as a critical backbone of US grand strategy."--Abstract.
