The Personal Vision of Ingmar Bergman
註釋Ingmar Bergman is a film maker whose roots are firmly planted in the tradition of the theater. Bergman began as a stage actor and playwright and has continued his work in the theater while writing and directing thirty films. He currently holds the most important position in the Swedish theater as head of the Royal Dramatic Theater of Stockholm. Jörn Donner, Swedish critic and film maker, concentrates exclusively on an analysis of each of the films and searches the social environment of the director's native country and the literary traditions of modern Europe for the sources of Bergman's inspiration. The author tries to show the relation of Bergman to Sweden's other great dramatic artist, August Strindberg. Donner's elaboration of the Christian and post-Christian questions which have obsessed Bergman is thorough, and his stylistic analysis is lucid, though brisk. The book presents the reader with a vast number of facts and literate analyses of Bergman's works.
