註釋This publication is intended as a guide to assessing the issues posed by genetics as they relate to people with disabilities. It first reviews principles that have been proposed for evaluating genetic research & its application. These principles (justice, non-discrimination, diversity, autonomy, and informed decision making) are then applied to issues that emerged in critiques of drafts of the UNESCO Declaration on the Human Genome and Human Rights. The publication notes the ways these principles are, or are not, reflected in various articles of the Declaration. The main issues are: the propensity to reductionism (ignoring ethical, social, & political context) as a methodological tool in science; the importance of human diversity; the threat of eugenics; balancing benefits & harms of scientific developments; and autonomy & participation in decision making. A copy of the Declaration is appended.
