註釋Presents 159 documents, most of them translated from the original Greek (a few appear in the original French or English), covering the periods 1918-34 and 1943-57. Those of the earlier period (pp. 69-246) discuss, inter alia, some prewar antisemitic incidents in Greece. Pp. 247-398 contain documents pertaining to the Holocaust and post-Holocaust periods, describing the deportation of Jews from Salonika, the rescue of Jews in Athens, and other aspects of the genocide of Greek Jews. Archbishop Damaskinos and other eminent Greeks tried to intervene on behalf of their Jewish compatriots. In the final stage of the war, and afterwards, many Jewish leaders expressed their gratitude to the Greek people who rendered help to Jews. Greece was the first European country which, as early as 1944-45, enacted laws regarding the return of Jewish property to the legal owners or heirs.
