The first successful importation of date palms from the Old World in 1890 marked the beginning fo the date industry in the Southwest. These palms, and many palms imported later, were infested with a scale insect, then unknown to science but later classified as Parlatoria blachandi (Targ.). This scale was early recognized as a limiting factor in the commercial production of dates, and an investigation was begun, the objective being eradication.
