My Friend Rito
註釋Rito Calabrese is what one might call a rough diamond, and I mean this very positively. He has a rustic charm about him. He has a strong work ethic and a big heart. This book encapsulates the real Rito; however, author Paul Heywood-Smith, KC, has also examined the historical truths about the Italian migrants that came to Australia both pre-and post-World War Two.This biography touches upon some of the difficulties encountered by young migrants who left their loved ones, familiar culture, and environment to journey to the other side of the world-an unknown world. But despite the barriers of ethnicity and language, Rito's grit, resilience, and determination made the most of the opportunities. And when there were no opportunities, he made his own.Italians are hard-working and creative. They steadfastly retain their traditions because this way of life helps enrich our community. These qualities have made South Australia the envy of the world because it is an inclusive and diverse culture.I congratulate Mr Heywood-Smith for writing this story about Rito's life. It is a story that needs to be told because, in my view, it will inspire the lives of future generations.Cav. Ted Iuliano, LLB, JP, OAMMagistrateMagistrates' Court of South Australia
