Antigua, the colonial capital of the Reino de Guatemala, comprising present-day Central America, nurtured a building tradition which resulted in a distinctive style reflecting the social, econ., and political forces which operated there for 250 years. Markman carried out a archaeological investigation of Antigua, examining the physical remains of the buildings damaged by an earthquake and abandoned in 1773.
