註釋This study of the participation of more than 400 western Canadian Indians in World War I offers a unique opportunity to view their society one generation after the signing of the treaties. After background on Native culture and its suppression under government policies in the years before the war, the study reviews the recruitment of Indians into the Canadian armed forces; the participation of western Indians in the war, including their reasons for enlisting and their performance as soldiers; and what happened to these soldiers after the war was over.
