註釋In most of the ghettos there was some form of educational framework for the children, official or clandestine, which was usually supported by the Zionist youth movements. In Theresienstadt, children's houses (which also served as schools) were established in July 1942, under the guidance of Egon Redlich and Freddy Hirsch. In addition to classes, the children participated in sports and cultural activities; for most of them, the children's house replaced the family unit. However, conditions were very difficult, including lack of educational material, hunger, and constant threat of deportation. In September 1943, 5,000 Jews were deported to Birkenau, and another 5,000 in December; they were interned in the family camp. Freddy Hirsch established Block 31 for the children, where they were able to receive some education and participate in various activities. In March 1944 the entire first group from Theresienstadt was gassed, and Hirsch committed suicide; in July 1944 the second group was gassed, and the family camp ceased to exist.
