It investigates the changing female roles caused by the removal of the middle class family from the sphere of production during the eighteenth century. In particular, the book analyzes in depth the conflicting images of women presented in two transitional novels which had a strong impact on readers in the early 1770s, Sophie von La Roche's Geschichte des Fräuleins von Sternheim and Goethe's Die Leiden des jungen Werthers.
